Statue Details:

This large bronze goat sculpture stands on a rectangular stone base. And we would see the goat with an N and two stars on its side. Dimensions are 48 x 30 x 86 inches (1.22 m x 0.76 m x 2.18 m). The Navy Bill was renovated in 2015 by the Class of 1965. Sculptor Tony Thamasangvarn and Baltimore Art Nouveau Foundry added “rank insignia, war devices, shrapnel from Vietnam, and a steel cube from a nuclear submarine” donated by the class in the football field reenactment of the Navy Bill. The N on the Navy Bill blanket is the varsity letter, and the two stars (“N-stars” in academy parlance) represent two victories over West Point in the annual Army-Navy Varsity game.

About the Original Goat Statue:

This Bill the Goat was created by the artist Clemente Spampinato. Clemente Spampinato designed the goat statue in 1956 and submitted it to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957, making the goat the academy’s mascot. Until 2010, the sculpture was located within Gate 1 of the academy. After a five-year renovation underwritten by the Class of 1965, the statue was returned to Gate 1. A second statue commissioned by the Class of 1965 was placed in the North End area of Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on June 9, 2015. It was reopened on October 24, 2015. Navy Bill’s alias is the goat mascot.
