Background of the Sculpture:

On May 22, 1888, Pentecost Tuesday, two hundred believers arrived at the Popinkine Temple for the first time by walking, riding, or canoeing to worship the Virgin Mary of Deliverance. For more than a century, this pilgrimage has attracted nearly 100,000 people each year and has become an important event for Senegalese Christianity.

Although the Virgin Mary has never appeared, Bishop Picarda was inspired by the shrine of Our Lady of Deliverance in Dover, Normandy, France, and created a pilgrimage site for Senegalese Catholics. Later, the Notre Dame of Deliverance evolved into the Notre Dame of Popenkin, where large numbers of believers gather every Pentecost Monday to pray to the Virgin.

The Popenkin pilgrimage is seen as an opportunity for self-healing, helping people reconcile with themselves, others, and God, experience the Christian spirit, and symbolize a bridge for inter-religious dialogue in Senegal.
