Sculpture Background:
This corten steel war memorial—also known as the South Ribble War Memorial or the Leyland WWI War Memorial—is located in the Peace Garden in Lostock Hall, Lancashire, UK.
Unveiled on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2015, it was designed by David Palmer and fabricated by DP Structures, serving as the centerpiece of the local commemorative landscape.
Appearance and Symbolism:
The sculpture consists of a curved weathering steel wall standing approximately 9 meters tall. The material features a rich, warm, rust-red patina that continues to evolve, forming a stable, protective oxide layer.
The wall incorporates a “cut-out” design, featuring the silhouette of a soldier holding a rifle with his head bowed in silent tribute—an opening through which the sky beyond is visible. On one side, the word “REMEMBER” is inscribed, while the other side is densely etched with the names of local soldiers who perished in the First World War.
The hollow silhouette represents the fallen, with the void symbolizing the absence of life. The rusted steel evokes the passage of time, while the engraved names serve as an enduring tribute to the departed—conveying a core message of remembering history and praying for peace.
Providing Custom Services:
This design—characterized by its use of negative space and inscriptions—allows the memorial to carry the unique memories and tributes specific to a particular place.
