The first step in maintaining a tombstone or headstone is to determine its material. Once determined, you can choose the appropriate cleaning method. For marble, use the following cleaning steps. For granite, see our guide “How to Clean a Granite Headstone/Tombstone”.

You’ll need it.

Water, Wooden squeegee ,soft cloth ,Non-ionic soap (e.g., ivory or Orvus),Natural brush

Steps for Cleaning Marble Headstones:

Only marble in good clean condition should be used. Check the entire headstone for cracks, signs of wear and damage. If these exist, it is best to leave them as they are. Cleaning weak marble can lead to further, irreparable damage.

Saturate the stone with water so that any growth that may occur is saturated.

Use a wooden scraper to remove algae or moss from the surface.

Mix 1 tablespoon of non-ionic soap with 1 gallon of water.

Use a brush to apply the soap mixture to the surface and wipe away any debris.

Keep the stone moist with water during the cleaning process.

After removing all clutter, rinse the stone thoroughly with water.

Repeat every 18 months. If more frequent cleaning is required, use water to remove any dirt or residue that may be present.

Other Tips and Advice:

Use only wooden tools when cleaning marble. Plastic tools can cause scuffing.

If there are oil or grease stains on the stone, add a small amount of ammonia to the cleaning solution.

If there are patches, etc., made of other metals, do not allow the cleaning solution to come into contact with those metals.

Non-ionic soap is classified as a cleaning solution, which means it is not charged. Other soaps are classified as anionic (negative charge), cationic (positive charge) or amphoteric (charge based on pH).
