Marble Mary Mackillop Statue Details:
This Mary Mackillop statue is hand-carved from natural marble. The young Mary Mackillop stands in a robe with a scarf on her head, holding a Bible in one hand and touching the child’s head with the other. The robe is decorated with different cross decorations, and the folds of the clothes are natural and delicate.
Two children stand on her left and right. The little boy has side-combed hair, wears overalls, and puts his hands on both sides of his clothes, looking shy and timid.
The little girl on the other side has long curly hair, wears a long skirt, and holds Mary Mackillop in both hands, looking very dependent.
Introduction to Mary Mackillop:
Mary Helen Mackillop (1842-1909) was born in Melbourne and was an Australian nun. She was canonized on October 17, 2010 and is the first Australian Catholic saint to be canonized. She co-founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart with Father Julian Tenison-Woods, and established many schools and welfare institutions in Australia and New Zealand, aiming to provide education for poor rural populations.
