Marble Statue of the Three Graces Details:

This white marble statue of the three graces shows the three daughters of Zeus in an elegant and intimate posture. The three women are naked, with only some light white cloth on their bodies, adding a bit of mystery and softness. They stand together, leaning on each other as if sharing the girl’s thoughts. The woman in the middle slightly tilts her head towards the woman on the left, and the three of them put their shoulders on each other, forming a harmonious and intimate combination. The sculpture vividly captures the warmth and connection between them through delicate carving techniques. The folds of the clothes and the curves of the human body are handled very naturally and dynamically.

Sculpture Background Introduction:

It was commissioned from Antonio Canova by John Russel, 6th Duke of Bedford, who visited the sculptor in his studio in Rome in 1814 and was captivated by the group of the Three Graces which Canova had carved for the Empress Josephine, the estranged wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. After She had died in May of that year, the Duke offered to buy the three graces statue from Canova, but Josephine’s son claimed it, and that version is now in the Hermitage, St Petersburg.

Afterward, the Duke commissioned a second three-grace statue from Canova; this was begun in 1814, finished in 1817, and installed at Woburn in 1819. Canova came over to England to supervise the installation. In the Temple, it was displayed on a pedestal adapted from an earlier marble plinth, with a rotating top.
