Madonna of Bruges Statue Introduction:
Michelangelo’s original work of the Madonna of Bruges statue was created between 1501 and 1504 and was purchased by a Bruges merchant. It was looted by the French army to Paris in 1794 and returned in 1815. During World War II, it was smuggled by the German army, and recovered after the war. It is now stored in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges and remains to this day.
Virgin Mary wears a headscarf and has a kind and gentle face. Her left hand slightly holds baby Jesus, and her right hand holds a Bible. Jesus stands and leans intimately on the Virgin Mary. There is a round marble base below, which is stable and harmonious.
