Mercury Riding Pegasus statue is hand-carved from Fangshan white marble. Inspired by the sculpture created by Antoine Coissevaux, it depicts the spectacular scene of Mercury, the Roman god known for his speed and agility, riding the powerful Pegasus in Greek mythology.
In the sculpture, Mercury wears a winged helmet and winged shoes, symbolizing his identity as a “god’s messenger”. He sits sideways on Pegasus, holding the reins with both hands, looking down, with a heroic and confident look, as if he had just finished a successful battle.
The Pegasus below, with its hind legs on the ground, its front legs raised, its wings spread, its mouth open, its tail raised, and the hair on its head standing upright, seems to be expressing its joy.
Below the Pegasus is a base decorated with various elements, such as shields, quivers, cloth, reliefs, etc., which increases the authenticity of the entire scene.
The entire marble sculpture has a smooth and delicate surface. The figure’s eyes, mouth, muscle lines of the Pegasus, the clearly layered large and small wings, and even the hair above the horse’s hooves are all very fine and vivid, and can be called a masterpiece of art.
