Augusta Savage Harp Sculpture Details:

This bronze replica of the Augusta Savage the Harp sculpture is exquisitely detailed. Its antique brown exterior features a harp as its central element, with multiple figures integrated into the structure. They are arranged in a neat row, from largest to smallest, with their hands behind their backs, each singing loudly. The young man in the front kneels on one knee with his hands spread out, appearing reverent.

Lift Every Voice and Sing Statue Background:

In 1937, Augusta Savage was commissioned to create a sculpture for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. She was the only Black woman commissioned at the time, and inspired by her friend James Weldon Johnson’s 1900 poem “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” she created the sculpture in two years, the song often called the “Negro National Anthem.”

Augusta Savage the Harp Meaning:

The sculpture features 12 Black singers, representing the strings of a harp. Their close arrangement symbolizes the unity and resilience of African Americans.

“The Harp” focuses on the theme of music, combining the image of African American singing with the harp as an instrument, highlighting the significant contributions of African Americans to music.

The sculpture’s soundboard, designed as an arm and a hand, represents the hand of God, supporting the harp and the singers, symbolizing God’s protection of African Americans.

In the foreground, a kneeling young man holds a sheet of music, as if devoutly offering music to God, further reinforcing this religious and spiritual symbolism.
